Notion Pricing in 2026: What Each Plan Actually Costs a Marketing Team

Notion pricing comparison showing a per-seat plan ladder against a metered credit bill

Your Notion quote came from a post that read the annual rate as monthly. Did you notice the vendor never renders a monthly column? What sits underneath both plans is a second meter almost nobody prices.

Notion pricing in 2026: the ladder as the vendor renders it

Every figure below was read off https://www.notion.com/pricing on 2026-09-26, in USD, where the page renders one number per plan under a banner reading "Save up to 20% with yearly".

The Business row settles the question for the whole field. The vendor's startups page states plainly that "Notion's Business Plan costs $20 per member paid annually" (verified 2026-09-26). The pricing page prints $20 with no billing term; the startups page names it. Together they prove the $10 and $20 on every explainer are the annual-billed rates, and that is the fact the whole third-party layer was compiled without.

The page then admits, in a different sentence, that a second column exists. "Save up to 20% with yearly" only means something if a reader can compare two rates, and the page never shows both. Same seat-plus-module problem we unpicked in HubSpot pricing.

It does print both rates for one add-on. Custom domains and branding costs "$8 per month per domain paid annually, or $10 per month per domain paid monthly" (verified 2026-09-26). One sentence, two terms. On the seat cards the vendor chooses not to.

Two smaller rows, both off the same page (verified 2026-09-26): guests are free and are not seats (10 on Free, unlimited on paid), and refunds follow the term at 3 days monthly and 30 days annual.

The annual-versus-monthly gap, and the arithmetic behind it

The monthly-billed rates are $12 (Plus) and $24 (Business) per member. The vendor's page renders neither number, so treat them as third-party-consistent and arithmetically corroborated, never as read off a tier card. Seven independent 2026 checks agree, among them get-alfred.ai (Aug 19, 2026), usecarly.com (Jul 15, 2026) and felloai.com (Jun 12, 2026).

The math closes on its own: $12 x 0.833 = $10 and $24 x 0.833 = $20, so the monthly rate is exactly 1.2 times the annual rate. In the other direction, 1 divided by 1.2 = 83.3%, a 16.7% saving that sits inside the page's "up to 20% with yearly" claim. The Notion Plus price for ten seats is therefore $100 a month annual or $120 monthly.

That relationship explains the price confusion you have already hit. Capterra lists Notion at $12 per user per month, the monthly rate, and saasworthy.com prints "$10/month or $8/month when billed annually", applying the discount to the wrong side of the pair. Both compile from one column.

The AI layer is a second meter, and seats do not buy it

Start with the vendor's own words, from the Custom Agents block on the pricing page (verified 2026-09-26): "Custom Agents. AI agents handle repetitive tasks autonomously, so your team doesn't have to. Free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits."

That is the most quotable sentence on this query and no third-party explainer uses it. There are two meters beneath it. Our Notion AI review covers the assistant on its own terms.

Meter one is a usage allowance, and its size is unpublished. Business and Enterprise "include a usage allowance for certain Notion AI features", measured in "a six-hour window and a monthly window" (notion.com/help/manage-your-usage-allowance-for-notion-ai, verified 2026-09-26). It covers the personal Notion Agent, image generation and page translation, but not AI Meeting Notes (its own 10-hour daily cap), Custom Agents, Workers or premium models. Approach the ceiling and "access to some AI features may temporarily pause until your usage refreshes". The mechanism is documented; the number is not, so plan for a limit you cannot see.

Meter two is credits, at $10 per 1,000 monthly. Credits are "available as an add-on to Business and Enterprise plans" (notion.com/product/ai, verified 2026-09-26). A Free or Plus workspace cannot buy them at any price. Read that twice, because it reframes the decision: for a Plus team, one Custom Agent costs a plan move plus a meter, not a top-up.

What spends a credit (vendor help pages, verified 2026-09-26): Custom Agents, metered since 2026-05-04; Workers; premium models on every use; and ordinary Notion AI use past the allowance if an admin enabled the credit fallback. Premium models ship switched off, so "nothing spends credits until an admin turns a model on", and premium tokens are charged "at each provider's published rates, with no markup".

Is $10 per 1,000 an add-on price or an overage rate? Both. It buys a monthly credit block and it is the rate applied once the allowance empties or an agent runs. Three facts the ranking guides leave out:

  • Running out stops work instead of billing you. Agents pause and scheduled runs are skipped rather than run retroactively, so the failure is an outage, not an invoice.
  • There is a second annual-versus-monthly gap inside the meter. Credits are reported at $13 per 1,000 on annual against $10 monthly (third-party: breeze.pm, notis.ai, 2sync.com; the vendor states neither).
  • The tier some pages still sell was retired. Any $8 per member per month AI add-on was retired in May 2025, when the suite moved into Business. Business today includes Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search (Beta) and Research mode (Beta).

The meter, not the seat, decides this bill, as it does with OpenAI API pricing on tokens and Claude pricing on usage-tiered seats.

What a real team pays: three worked profiles

Each profile shows its assumptions so you can substitute your own. The vendor publishes neither a per-run credit figure nor the size of the allowance, which is why those assumptions are visible.

Profile A: a 3-person content team. Documents and drafts, no agents.

  • Plus, annual: 3 x $10 = $30 / month ($360 / year)
  • Plus, monthly: 3 x $12 = $36 / month ($432 / year), a $72 annual difference for identical seats
  • AI: limited trial only, because Plus cannot buy credits
  • Total: $30 a month annual, $36 monthly

The point is the ceiling, not the price. This team cannot buy the AI layer at any price without changing plan.

Profile B: a 15-seat marketing org that wants the bundled AI, no agents yet.

  • Business, annual: 15 x $20 = $300 / month ($3,600 / year)
  • Business, monthly: 15 x $24 = $360 / month ($4,320 / year), a $720 annual difference
  • AI: bundled suite included, subject to the unpriced usage allowance. Credits purchased: 0
  • Total: $300 a month annual, $360 monthly

At this size the billing term is worth more than the AI suite. The $720 saved by choosing annual buys 72,000 credits at the $10 per 1,000 monthly rate, and it costs nothing but a decision.

Profile C: a 40-seat company running agents in production.

  • Business, annual: 40 x $20 = $800 / month in seats

Run counts, the 1 to 30 credits-per-run range and block pricing are third-party (fast.io, breeze.pm, Sacra), not vendor figures. The 150,000-credit month is a single reported case, not a benchmark.

The heavy row is why this article exists. At the reported heavy end, credits cost $1,500 a month against an $800 seat bill, 1.9x the entire seat line. The credit meter is the only part of a Notion bill that scales with how hard your team uses the product rather than with headcount.

Seats versus usage, and the choice that buys credits

Two budget lines behave differently. The seat line scales with headcount and is fully published. The usage line scales with behaviour, is partly unpublished, and can stop your agents when it empties, so forecast it from a run count you measure or guess.

Every connected tool is drifting this way. Cledara's 2026 buying data puts AI tools at 26.4% of all SaaS purchases, up from 8.8% in April 2025, and advises planning 15 to 25% of new SaaS spending on AI capability (third-party benchmark, verified 2026-09-26). Your Notion line is now a seat price plus an allowance plus a meter, and only the first of those three is on the tier card.

The billing term touches the seat line and costs nothing but a decision:

Annual rates vendor-verified 2026-09-26; monthly rates third-party-consistent and not rendered by the vendor page.

At 40 seats on Business, choosing annual billing saves $1,920 a year, which buys 192,000 credits at the $10 per 1,000 monthly rate, roughly five weeks of the heavy profile's consumption. No page in the field converts a seat-term saving into credit units, the same lesson as the metered-task arithmetic in Zapier pricing.

One dated change belongs in your calendar. Workers start drawing credits on 2026-10-15, at roughly $0.0023 per run (third-party: ivconsulting.in, breeze.pm, 2sync.com, verified 2026-09-26), 19 days after this article's verification date. If your team is in the Workers beta, the free period is why credit usage looks tidy today, and it ends this quarter. No competing page on this query mentions the date.

The upsell path is short enough to budget rather than discover. A free workspace stops fitting when a second member joins, since the block limit bites "for 2+ members". Plus stops fitting when someone wants the AI suite. Business is where the agent layer becomes purchasable at all.

If the workload you are sizing has to run against your own data, that is the half Allable handles, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Costing Notion seats is a separate decision from costing the AI marketing platform work you intend to put through them.

A table labelled "Price (annual)": $10 Plus, $20 Business, plus body copy reading "$10 per user/month (billed annually)"

A plan overview

The only high-authority third-party editorial on the query, and roughly two years old

Zoom out and the pattern beats any single row. The Plus price appears as five different values: $8, $10, $12, $15 and $18, and Business as $15, $18, $19.99, $20 and $24. That is one column, read at different dates across a price increase, plus pages that applied the discount to the wrong side of the pair.

The rule that resolves it: the vendor's pricing page and its startups page beat every third-party explainer, and the annual column is read separately from the monthly column. A dated price is correct on the day it was read. An undated one is a guess with a number attached.

What we could and could not verify

Pricing pages that hide their gaps look exactly like pricing pages that got the numbers wrong, so here is the list plainly.

What we could verify on 2026-09-26. The seat ladder ($0 / $10 / $20 / custom), the "save up to 20% with yearly" banner, the $10 per 1,000 monthly credit rate, the $8 or $10 per domain add-on, the free-guest rule and the refund windows, all off https://www.notion.com/pricing. The Business figure as an annual-billed rate is vendor-stated on https://www.notion.com/startups. The two-meter structure, the windows, the pause behaviour and the no-markup policy come from the vendor's help pages.

What we could not. The vendor does not render a monthly-billed seat price anywhere on the pricing page, so $12 and $24 stay labelled third-party-consistent and corroborated by arithmetic. It does not publish the size of the included allowance. It does not publish a per-run credit cost: the 1 to 30 credits-per-run range, the $0.05 to $0.30 benchmarks and the 150,000-credit case are third-party, as is the $13 per 1,000 annual credit rate. And the per-module add-on list that used to sit on the startups page, pricing AI Search, AI Chatbot, AI Meeting Notes, AI Writing Assistant and AI Email App separately, did not appear when that page was re-rendered on 2026-09-26, while independent evidence says the standalone AI add-on was retired in May 2025.

Two access notes. One headless render of the pricing page timed out while text extraction of the same URL succeeded, so no price here rests on a screenshot. The canonical credits help URL returns the site's own 404.

What the market data says. An AI-spend benchmark attributed to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta puts average company AI spend at $2,068 per employee in 2026, up 50% from $1,358, with a 14x gap between a median company under $200 per employee and a top decile above $2,800. Zylo's 2026 index reports that 61% of organizations cut projects because of unplanned SaaS cost increases. A metered agent line is exactly that kind of increase, which is the argument for costing it first. Marketing workflow automation and workflow automation tools cover what teams automate once it is under control, and marketing automation tools covers the stack underneath.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Notion cost per month?

Free is $0, Plus is $10 per member per month and Business is $20 per member per month as the pricing page renders them, and all three are annual-billed (verified 2026-09-26). The same seats run $12 and $24 on monthly billing, which the vendor does not render but seven independent 2026 checks report consistently.

Is there a free Notion plan?

Yes, and it does not expire on a clock. The page describes Free as free for individuals, with the block limit biting when a second member joins. Guests never consume a seat.

How much does Notion AI cost per user?

Less than the add-on prices still circulating, and not per user. Notion AI is bundled into Business at $20 per member per month, and the agent layer runs on credits at $10 per 1,000 monthly (verified 2026-09-26). Credits are an add-on to Business and Enterprise only.

What is a Notion credit worth?

One US cent, at the vendor's published $10 per 1,000 monthly credits. Reported consumption runs 1 to 30 credits per agent run, with third-party benchmarks of $0.05 to $0.15 per run for task routing and $0.10 to $0.30 for a daily brief agent.

Why do different sites show different Notion prices?

Because most copy one number from a page that never labels its billing term, at different dates, across a price increase. The Plus price appears as $8, $10, $12, $15 and $18, and Business as $15, $18, $19.99, $20 and $24. The vendor renders one column, its startups page confirms it is annual, and monthly billing is 1.2x the annual rate.

Is Notion Plus worth it for a small team?

For a three-person team doing documents, drafts and a wiki, yes: $30 a month on annual billing against $36 on monthly, with no AI cost on top because Plus cannot buy credits. It stops being right the moment anyone wants the AI suite. Size that jump before you promise the team agents.

Do I need the Business plan to use Notion AI?

For the useful half of it, yes. The Notion Business plan carries the bundled suite (Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search Beta, Research mode Beta), and credits are an add-on to Business and Enterprise only. Free and Plus rows for those features read "Limited Trial".

What happens when a team runs out of Notion credits?

Access pauses. Agents stop and scheduled runs are skipped rather than run retroactively, so the failure is a capability outage rather than an overage invoice. Credits do not roll over, so budget around the monthly reset.

What are the best Notion alternatives?

It depends which half of Notion you are replacing. Teams that came for the databases compare Airtable and Coda, a different cost model with its own seat economics, and marketing analytics is the part a marketing team feels first. Teams that came for the AI suite and found the meter are really solving for the agent layer, the same arithmetic as Copy.ai pricing and AI marketing assistant.
